I’m in my second semester at the moment, which for everyone except other uni students and yanks out there, pretty much just means that we’re post-Christmas.
I’ve had my first written exam that counts towards my grade for the year, and my next one is 8 weeks away.
Honestly the day-to-day isn’t nearly as exciting as I imagined it being. Most of the learning (at my school, anyways) happens in my room, alone, with my eyes glued to some overly complex diagram of an area of the body that looks like it doesn’t exist.
Since this is only first year, we have to learn the foundational science (biochem, physiology, histology) of the body and how it works before we can really dive into the interesting stuff: where everything falls apart and we fix people up.
I mean, we’ve touched on a fair few conditions and drugs, but right now I feel like I don’t actually know much. I suppose I’ll feel like this for a while, but to be fair I know a lot of anatomy, so at the very least if I don’t know how to fix something, I can just point at whatever is going wrong and shout out it’s name in Greek.
It’s a LOT of work. Every day there’s a bunch more stuff to learn. You have to keep on top of it. Luckily I’ve picked up my slack since Christmas, so for the rest of med school I won’t have a backlog of lecture or anatomy notes constantly nagging at me from the back of my mind, like a persistent IV drip of anxiety. So it feels nice to know I’m up to date, even if I don’t know as much as I should.
So yeah my stress levels aren’t too high, as all the exam scores add up, so if you mess up in one, theoretically you can make up for it in another.
I have my second GP placement tomorrow, which basically involves me and a fellow student sit in on some consultations and occasionally asking some questions. The whole idea is for us to build up our conversation skills, so it’s pretty useful, even though I don’t want to be a GP.
So yeah, this is just a little update. I’m going to start posting here more often. Yesterday I accidentally changed the wordpress theme which completely screwed up the site, as there’s no undo button (only like 20 years behind there, guys) so I took it as an opportunity to take a look at the other themes. FINALLY I found one that I really liked, I think it works a lot better, and I’m really really really looking forward to making use of it!
Anyways, that’s all from me, for now. Sorry this has been a bit vague, but I don’t often find the motivation to write, so I felt I had to get something down before I gave up to go and watch Netflix.
